Aboelkhar and Makin take the titles
Fayrouz Aboelkheir and Joel Makin are 2025 HKFC Open Champions, after victories over Siva Subramaniam and Youssef Soliman in today’s PSA Silver level finals.
Third seed Aboelkhar was taking on top seed and defending champion Siva Subramanian, but it was the young Egyptian who was dominant in the early stages of the match, her movement and shotmaking too much for the Malaysian to cope with.
Subramaniam managed to turn the tide as she opened up a lead in the third before pulling a game back, but Aboelkheir was back on it from the start of the fourth, and there was no stopping her as she claimed her second title of the month after the Chestnut Hill Classic, also a Silver event.
“I’m very happy with how I’ve played the last two weeks,” said a delighted Champion, “my second title in a month, I’m happy!
“Siva is one of the top players, it’s never easy to play her and I’ve lost to her twice before, so really happy to win this time.”
The men’s final saw top seed Makin take on Youssef for the fourth time this year, those matches averaging 78 minutes in duration with the Egyptian the victor last time out in the U.S. Open.
Makin started strongly, taking an early lead in both opening games and despite a series of ferocious rallies, stayed ahead to take a healthy looking two game lead. It was Ibrahim who opened up early in the third, and despite a number of slips and pauses for court maintenance, held on to reduce the deficit.
The final game was the quickest of all though as Makin pressed home his early advantage to close out the match in 77 minutes to claim the title.
“It’s the 10th or 11th time we’ve played,” said the new champion, “and it’s always very explosive and physical and tonight was no different.
“He’s come back well and started to take out some top guys, including me last time so it was nice to get a win tonight.
“I’ve enjoyed being here this week, the club and the atmosphere have been great, I’ll be back for sure next year if it’s on.
“I’ve played four good matches which sets me up well for next week, but it’s a tough schedule with back to back tournaments here, I’ll enjoy it for about two hours tonight, then it’s back to business tomorrow.”
Preview :
It’s finals day in Hong Kong, starting with the legends, before moving on to the PSA Silver Finals.
Top seeds Siva Subramaniam and Joel Makin will meet in-form opponents who both upset the second seeds in yesterday’s semi-finals.
Egypt’s Fayrouz Aboelkheir has now reached three finals this season, made the semis of the Egyptian Open, won last week’s Chestnut Hill Classic, and looks on the verge of entering the world’s top ten. Defending champion Subramaniam has been in the top ten for the whole of this year, but her last trophy came at the Cincinnati Cup in February.
They’ve played three times, with the Malaysian winning the two meeting in 2024, Aboelhkeir taking the win in this year’s World Tour Finals.
Makin, currently World #5, won the Pittsburgh Open in February and the World Tour Finals in June, and although he has an 8-2 H2H lead over Youssef Ibrahim – three of those wins this year – it was the World #7 Egyptian who won their last meeting, in the U’S. Open quarter-finals.
Those four meeting this year have averaged 78 minutes in duration, so a tough encounter looks in store.
