Simmy does it again as the quarter-finalists are decided
The 2025 edition of the HKFC Football Club Open continued today in Happy Valley, with sixteen second round matches of the PSA Silver level event with yesterday’s Round One winners meeting the top eight seeds. There were two seeding upsets, one of them producing the sole home winner as the quarter-finalists were decided.
As yesterday, the final match of the featured unseeded Chan Sin Yuk, this time taking on Wales’ seventh seed Tesni Evans. ‘Simmy’ was well on top in each of the three games with Tesni far from her usual combative self. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old sole Hong Kong survivor was delighted to reach the quarter-finals (probably her first Silver QF, to be mchecked).
She joins the remaining seven seeds in those quarter-finals, where she’ll face France’s fourth seeded Melissa Alves, who ended the run of wildcard Toby Tse. At the top of the draw defending champion Siva Subramaniam fended off a spirited fightback from Tomato Ho, winning in four games to set up a QF against Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold, who had too much in the locker for young Egyptian Habiba Hani.
In the bottom half of the women’s draw Amanda Sobhy, Sana Ibrahim, Fayrouz Aboelkheir and Aira Azman progressed as expected, eighth seeded Malaysian Azman the only one to drop a game.
Second seed Sobhy has history at HKFC : “I didn’t realise I won this event in 2014, their first women’s event which I’m really proud of. This is one of my favourite clubs on tour, I love the people and the community here so happy to be back.”
The Men’s upset came about as Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinmann ousted fifth seed Mazen Hesham in straight games, not entirely surprising as the Egyptian struggles to regain his form and fitness after a long layoff. He now meets top seed Joel Makin who beat Colombian Juan Vegas in straight games.
There could have been more upsets though – Kareem El Torkey pushed his fourth seeded compatriot Youssef Ibrahim to the limit, particularly in a ferocious first game which Ibrahim led 10-7 before finally losing it 19-21. That match brought a standing ovation from the crowd.
Defending champion Aly Abou Eleinin was also taken the distance, finally edging past a disappointed Declan James 11-9 in the fifth after 76 minutes.
Ibrahim now meet another fellow Egyptian in Fares Dessouky, who beat Greg Lobban in three, while Eleinen meets France’s Victor Crouin, victor over Leonel Cardenas in straight games.
In the bottom half of the draw second seed Karim Abdel Gawad recovered from dropping the opening game to beat wildcard Matthew Lai, he’ll face Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng who squeezed home in two of his three games against Ryunosukue Tsukue.
The quarter-finals start at 17.30 tomorrow, again played on on both all-glass courts.
