Day ONE, Mixed opening day for HK
It was a mixed day for the home players with five Hong Kong winners and five losers, and couple of remarkable comebacks.
Hong Kong’s Vanessa Chu has a great record at this event with several first round upsets, and her five game win over India’s Sunayna Kuruvilla kept that run going.
“I don’t think I played my best, I was quite nervous, but I’m pleased to get through that match,” said Vanessa who faces second seeded compatriot Joey Chan in round two.
Anna Serme and Salma Youssef both came from two games down, while Tong Tsz-Wing and Lee Ka Yi added to home interest in women’s round two.
“I haven’t come back from two-nil down very often,” said Serme, “so I’m happy with that an looking forward to playing Annie [Au, top seed and defending champion] tomorrow.”
There were three American winners, Shahjahan Khan coming through a tough five-setter to deny Tang Ming Kong, Chris Gordon beating Sebastien Bonmalais in straight games in the only seeding upset of the day, and Sabrina Sobhy easing through against HK wildcard Chan Sin Yuk.
Day Two sees the seeded players – including defending champions and top seeds Max Lee and Annie Au – enter the fray, with play starting at 15.00.
